Hey Thrill Seekers,
On the 21st February at 8pm on the U.S. network ABC, Star War’s very own Han Solo, Harrison Ford will be dropping information about the proposed Star Wars Land coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Regular readers of the blog will remember D23 (Disney convention) where Disney CEO Bob Iger first revealed Disney will be adding Star War to their parks.
We are creating a jaw-dropping new world that represents our largest single-themed land expansion ever, these new lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will transport guests to a whole new ‘Star Wars’ planet.
The Star Wars land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will have two signature attractions, including the ability to take the controls of one of the most recognizable ships in the galaxy, the Millennium Falcon, on a customised secret mission, and an epic Star Wars adventure that puts guests in the middle of a climactic battle.
We’re hoping Mr Ford releases some more information on the 21st… As soon as he does we’ll report it!
I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited for a new land!!! Like EVER.
Hey Thrill Seekers,
Disney went Star Wars mad yesterday when they not only released the official movie poster (below), a new teaser video (that will be released later today UK time) but also confirmed that they’ll be hosting a special ticket only event in December.
The event that will take place on December 17th and will give visitors entry into one of the first few public showings of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”; guests can then enjoy a private after-hours party at Disney’s Hollywood Studios until 2 a.m.
The party will include access to the new Star Wars Launch Bay exhibit, the Star Tours – The Adventures Continue attraction, and a DJ dance party. Select merchandise and food & beverage locations will operate during the after-hours party. The night will be concluded with fireworks set to the “Star Wars” score. No other attractions are planned to operate.
Star Wars VIP events will be advertised globally but surely watching it at Disney is the ultimate dream.
Hey Thrill Seekers,
When Bob Iger, Walt Disney’s Co. Chief speaks, generally people listen but when he talks about Star Wars everybody listens!
Yesterday speaking to Variety, Bob was asked about how Disney were going to use Star Wars within their parks. Disney famously purchased Lucas Films which included the rights to Star Wars for $4 billion in 2012 but have yet to add anything significant to their Theme Parks.
Mr Iger stated;
There will be a much larger ‘Star Wars’ presence in our parks globally, but we want to do this big, which takes time, and to do it right.
This is a significant statement from Iger regarding how seriously and protective they are of the brand, it would have been very easy to steam headfirst in to dedicated Star Wars Land based solely on the previous films but Disney have and are taking their time.
As with all projects including Avatar Land at Animal Kingdom which is said to be in the works, Disney’s Imagineers have full scope to bring these ip’s to life. Iger confirmed that they decided to hold back until Abrams had finished episode 8.
We couldn’t tell them what was new, I slowed it all down so what we come forward with will have a blend of the past, present and maybe the future. Now we have a sense of what’s in ‘Star Wars 8,’ and what some of the standalone films will have in them.
More details of what we can expect will probably coincide with the release of the new film due out next year… So not too long to wait.
Hey Thrill Seekers,
I’m not one to say “I told you so…” but….. “I told you so…” 🙂
Back in 2012 I wrote a piece just after Disney confirmed their purchase of Lucas Films (including Star Wars) about how I expected them to incorporate the massive franchise in to their parks.
Last night in Disney’s usual earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger stated Disney is
developing designs for a far greater ‘Star Wars’ presence in the parks, When we grow ‘Star Wars” presence, which we will do significantly, you will see better bets being made that will pay off for us than were made in the past,
As you can imagine the internet exploded…
Actual details of the planned expansion will not be announced until 2015 which coincides with the release of JJ Abrams new Star Wars film. However this hasn’t stopped the rumours from flying around from a dedicated land to a whole Star Wars park.
What we can look forward too is plenty of rumours, leaks and speculation. One thing I’m pretty sure about is that construction on such a massive project will be pretty hard to hide, so some major clues might not be too far away.
Hi Thrill Seekers,
I know, I know, a new Star Wars film isn’t exactly theme park news
but I thought the fact that Lucas Film is now owned by Disney gives me a little wiggle room. Plus when Disney make a purchase of this size you’d expect them to be looking to recoup as much of that money as they can, so a theme park land may well be in the pipeline, I wrote about what I’d like to see from a Star Wars Land a few weeks ago.
Now I know the last trilogy of Star Wars films were not up to much, but if latest reports are true Disney are definitely looking to alter that perception by drafting in JJ Abrams (Lost, Star Trek) to Direct. Abrams is a known fan of Star Wars and even took part in a “Ted Talks” lecture about the original Star Wars films.
The script has been written by Toy Story writer Michael Arndt with Lawrence Kasdan, writer of “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi” working as a consultant on the new project which is due for release in 2015.
In Friday night’s statement Abrams called it an “absolute honour” to get the job.
He went on to add
“I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid,”
Lucas himself said in the statement that
“I’ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.”
If I were writing the new Star Wars movie this is what I would do –
- More Boba Fett
- No Jaja Binks
- New main characters, move on from Luke, Han, Vader etc
- Go easy on the CGI, Live action is much better.
What would you do to make sure the next Star Wars Film was a success?
