Hey Thrill Seekers,
In 2031, Universal is set to open its brand-new theme park in Bedfordshire, and ever since the announcement, the internet has been buzzing with rumours about which IPs might headline the resort.
From blockbuster franchises to cult classics, speculation has been everywhere but do we finally have something concrete to go on?
Trademark
As of 23rd December 2024, Universal secured a UK trademark for Back to the Future covering theme park attractions and entertainment services.
Now, before we jump the gun a trademark alone doesn’t confirm a coaster. It could apply to:
- Merchandise
- Live shows
- Themed events
- Restaurants or immersive experiences
However… could Universal be looking for a brand new way to revitalise the franchise?
Concept Art Clues
Universal has released official concept art for the upcoming UK park and while conceptual renderings can change at any time (and are absolutely not confirmations), they’ve certainly fuelled discussion.
Fans have pointed out what appears to be:
- A plaza with architecture reminiscent of the 1950s
- A clock-tower–style structure that strongly echoes Hill Valley
- A major roller coaster silhouette rising behind the area
That combination has led many in the theme park community to speculate that this could be a Back to the Future–themed land, potentially anchored by a high-speed launch coaster.
The video that adds fuel to the fire
Adding to the speculation is a concept breakdown video from Amusement Insider, which highlights a coaster layout seemingly positioned behind the rumoured 1950s-style area.
While it’s important to stress this is analysis — not official confirmation — the proposed layout would certainly suit a time-travelling, high-energy attraction.
A launch coaster hitting 88mph? It almost writes itself.
So… Is It Happening?
At this stage, nothing has been officially confirmed by Universal regarding specific lands or rides for the UK park.
But between:
- The trademark filing
- The architectural hints in the concept art
- The prominent coaster silhouette
- The growing volume of industry speculation
…it’s fair to say the feeling is that we’re closer to having it than not having it.
What do you think?
Is a Back to the Future coaster and land something you’d like to see or has this IP lost out to time?
Smiles included…
Jamie
