Could Universal Be About To Purchase DreamWorks?

Hey Thrill Seekers,

I remember speaking to some Universal employees a few years ago regarding how Universal was seen by the public, words like “cool”, “edgy” and “tween” were banded around. All very positive words however what Universal were interested in doing at that time was to make sure that they were seen as a family location and not just for teenagers and above…

Today I read an interesting article on Variety that suggested Comcast, who own Universal are in talks to purchase DreamWorks Animation in a deal said to be worth more than $3 Billion.

DreamWorks has been ripe for purchase for a while now and although its had a few suitors no one has been able to complete a deal. The thinking behind Comcast’s interest is  the rich IP at DreamWorks disposal. Comcast have seen in the last few years Disney claim some very important IP in the shape of Marvel and Star Wars and perhaps the idea of the likes of Kung Fu Panda, Shrek and the characters from How To Train Your Dragon falling into “enemy” hands as a step to far.

The purchase of these well known IP’s plus some of the classic’s DreamWorks owns (Casper the Friendly Ghost, Peabody and Sherman) could help Universal appeal to a wider audience. Recently Universal purchased a large amount of land which is rumoured  to be used for a third gate, the introduction of these new IP’s along with the Nintendo deal they signed last year could be used to create a pre-teen paradise.

We’ll report more when we hear more.

Smiles included…
