⏰What Time Does Discovery Cove Open?

Discovery Cove’s waterways operate from 9:00am until 5:00pm.

However, this is where things get slightly different.

You should aim to arrive between 7:00am and 8:30am.

Current Discovery Cove guidance recommends guests arrive during this window for check-in, with the exact arrival time becoming even more important if you’ve booked additional experiences.

Older Discovery Cove information can show slightly different opening/check-in times, which is why you’ll sometimes see 7:00am, 7:15am or 8:00am mentioned online.

For your visit, follow the arrival instructions provided with your booking.

Our recommendation: Get there around 7:15am–7:45am

Yes, that is early.

But we’d much rather arrive early and have a relaxed start to the day than arrive at 9:30am and discover that we’ve missed the best opportunity to organise our schedule.

Discovery Cove’s official guidance says guests should plan to arrive between 7:00am and 8:30am.

If you’ve booked several additional experiences, arriving even earlier becomes important.

Discovery Cove specifically advises guests with three or more add-on experiences to arrive by 7:00am so there is enough time to check in and organise the day’s schedule.

7:30am onwards – Check in and get your Discovery Cove ID and Dolphin Swim time (if applicable)

If you’ve booked additional animal experiences, your arrival time becomes much more important.

Serenity Bay is the place to slow things down.

The water is maintained at around 85–86°F (30°C), making it particularly appealing if you’re visiting during the cooler months.

It’s also a good place to simply float around and relax.

Because Discovery Cove is designed as a full-day experience, don’t feel as though you need to spend every minute doing something.

Sometimes the best part is simply sitting in the water.

Wind-Away River

The lazy-river-style Wind-Away River allows you to float through Discovery Cove’s tropical landscape.

It’s a great way to take a break from the more active parts of the day.

Freshwater Oasis

🐬Should You Swim With Dolphins?

This is probably the biggest decision you’ll make when booking Discovery Cove.

There are packages that include the Dolphin Swim, while the Day Resort package provides the Discovery Cove experience without the dolphin swim.

If swimming with dolphins is something you’ve always wanted to do, the Signature Dolphin Swim package makes sense.

However, if you’re more interested in snorkelling, relaxing and enjoying the resort atmosphere, you don’t necessarily need to pay for the dolphin experience.

One important age restriction

Children must be at least 6 years old and 42 inches tall to participate in the dolphin swim.

Children aged 6–12 must also be accompanied by a paying adult who is participating in the dolphin swim.

This depends on what you want from your day.

Our favourite months: April, May and October

Orlando’s weather is generally warm during these months without the extreme summer temperatures.

April and May typically see daytime temperatures around 29–30°C, while October averages around 29°C.

For a UK visitor, that’s pretty much perfect swimming weather.

❄️Visiting Discovery Cove in Winter

December – February

Winter can actually be a great time to visit.

Average daytime temperatures are around 21–22°C, although evenings can be considerably cooler.

The big advantage is that the water temperatures at Discovery Cove are maintained throughout the year.

The freshwater areas remain around 30–30.5°C, while the saltwater Dolphin Lagoon and Grand Reef are maintained at around 24–25°C.

So even if the air temperature isn’t tropical, the water can still be very comfortable.

Our tip:

If visiting in January or February, take a dry cover-up or warm clothes for walking around between the water areas.

☀️Visiting Discovery Cove in Summer

June – August

This is classic Florida summer weather.

Expect temperatures around 32–33°C, high humidity and the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms.

The good news?

You’re already at a water resort.

The less good news?

Lightning and storms can temporarily affect outdoor water activities.

If you’re visiting in summer, we’d definitely recommend arriving early and making the most of the morning.

Unlike Disney and Universal, Discovery Cove deliberately limits attendance.

That means we wouldn’t obsess too much about finding a particular weekday.

Instead, we’d prioritise:

Good weather + availability + the best price.

Discovery Cove requires reservations and limits daily attendance to 1300.

One full day.

Don’t try to squeeze Discovery Cove into a morning.

The attraction is designed as a full-day experience, with the waterways operating from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

If you’ve paid for the experience, you want to make the most of it.

Hell yeah!

Yes, but there are restrictions around some animal experiences.

Personal cameras and recording devices are permitted in many areas.

However, Discovery Cove doesn’t allow personal cameras in the Dolphin Lagoons, Flamingo Mingle and Shark Swim for animal safety and equipment-safety reasons. Guests can take photos and video from designated beach areas, and Discovery Cove also offers photography packages.

Take your waterproof camera for the general areas, but don’t expect to film every animal interaction yourself.
